What Is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision is the surgical removal and/or replacement of silicone or saline implants. This procedure is utilized in order to change the size or shape of previously placed breast implants, or to correct complications that arose from a previous breast augmentation. It can also be to completely remove a previous implant and/or the surrounding implant capsule.

Capsular Contracture Treatment

We're excited to offer our patients the opportunity to participate in an ongoing clinical trial investigating an innovative treatment for capsular contracture—a common complication after breast implant surgery where the natural scar tissue capsule around the implant tightens and becomes constrictive, often causing discomfort or distortion.

In this randomized, controlled study, participants undergo revision surgery, and may be assigned to one of two treatment groups, one of which involves the placement of surgical mesh.  The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the use of mesh in revision surgery for capsular contracture.  Your involvement in this study may provide benefits to you, and may also help contribute to advancing medical research in breast implant outcomes.

You may qualify if you:

  • Are female, 22–66 years old
  • Have no history of breast cancer or previous breast reconstruction surgery
  • Can commit to attending all required in-person follow-up appointments

If you're experiencing symptoms of capsular contracture and meet these criteria, don't hesitate to our team today to learn more about eligibility and how to get involved.

Please Note: This is not a free procedure. Participation may include financial compensation from BD and discounted surgical fees, however the surgical procedure is not fully covered and payment is required.

What Is Capsular Contracture?

After any breast implant procedure, the body naturally forms a thin layer of scar tissue, known as a capsule, around the implant. In most cases, this capsule remains soft and flexible. However, in some patients, the capsule can tighten and thicken over time, causing the implant to feel firm, distorted, or uncomfortable. In more advanced cases, capsular contracture may lead to pain and noticeable changes in breast shape or position.

Capsular contracture can develop months or even years after breast augmentation. While the exact cause is not always clear, contributing factors may include inflammation, implant placement above the muscle, low-grade bacterial contamination, or the body’s individual healing response. The condition is commonly classified by severity, ranging from mild firmness to significant hardening and visible distortion.

How Breast Revision Surgery Can Help

Breast revision surgery offers effective solutions for capsular contracture and other implant-related concerns. At Vivify Plastic Surgery, Dr. Buchanan carefully evaluates the condition of the implants, surrounding tissue, and implant pocket to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

Depending on the severity of capsular contracture and the patient’s goals, revision surgery may involve removing or releasing the scar tissue capsule (capsulectomy), replacing or removing the implant, or adjusting the implant pocket. In some cases, implants that were originally placed above the chest muscle may be repositioned beneath the muscle to help reduce recurrence and improve overall breast shape and feel.

Additional Reasons for Breast Revision

In addition to capsular contracture, breast revision surgery can address a variety of other concerns, including implant rupture, rippling, asymmetry, implant shifting, or changes related to aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations. Revision procedures at Vivify are fully customized to help restore balance, comfort, and confidence.
