After any breast implant procedure, the body naturally forms a thin layer of scar tissue, known as a capsule, around the implant. In most cases, this capsule remains soft and flexible. However, in some patients, the capsule can tighten and thicken over time, causing the implant to feel firm, distorted, or uncomfortable. In more advanced cases, capsular contracture may lead to pain and noticeable changes in breast shape or position.
Capsular contracture can develop months or even years after breast augmentation. While the exact cause is not always clear, contributing factors may include inflammation, implant placement above the muscle, low-grade bacterial contamination, or the body’s individual healing response. The condition is commonly classified by severity, ranging from mild firmness to significant hardening and visible distortion.
