What Is Dermaplaning?

How Is Dermaplaning Performed?

Dermaplaning treatments are performed on an outpatient basis in our office. After the skin is cleaned, the dermaplaning will begin with a gentle scraping of the surface of the face with a sterile surgical scalpel to remove the surface layer of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. The treatment time will depend upon whether part of or the full face is being addressed. At a consultation beforehand, our team will explain the process of dermaplaning to you.

Ideal candidates for this procedure do not have rosacea, sensitive skin, or superficial hyperpigmentation. Dermaplaning procedures are considered relatively safe and effective for most skin tones. Patients suffering from severe acne should discuss their skin condition with our team beforehand. In the hours following your dermaplaning treatment, your skin will be slightly pink. This is a normal reaction that will fade in the coming days. It is not uncommon for peeling to occur as the skin heals.

But it is important not to pick at it; instead, you should allow the skin to fall off on its own. Patients will need to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun because the skin will be very sensitive in the days and weeks after the procedure. You can expect results soon after, as dermaplaning reveals softer, smoother skin right away. To help you care for your newly revealed skin, our team will discuss an improved skincare routine with you, including the regular application of sunscreen.

Our patients do not and should not experience any discomfort during this treatment, as it is noninvasive and uses a very gentle blade on only the top layer of skin to remove peach fuzz and dead skin cells.
