About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a surgery that reduces the size of the breasts. In order to decrease the size and weight of the breast, the surgeon removes excess tissue, fat and loose skin.

Is Breast Reduction Right for Me?

There are many reasons a woman considers breast reduction surgery – one of the main reasons being that the patient wants a permanent, long-term solution to problems caused by uncomfortably large breasts. If you suffer from any of the following conditions, breast reduction may benefit you:

  • If the size of your breasts is causing physical pain, or making it difficult to perform everyday tasks such as exercising or even sleeping
  • If you suffer from breast sagging, asymmetry or downward-pointing nipples, often referred to as pendulous breasts
  • If you are self-conscious or unhappy with the size of your breasts
  • If your posture is negatively affected by the weight of your breasts
  • If you experiences rashes or skin irritation in the skin underneath your breasts

If you consistently suffer from any of these conditions outlined above, we suggest you schedule a consultation with Dr. Buchanan to discuss the possibility of a reduction and the added benefits it could bring to your life.

Recovery

Recovery varies from patient to patient, but typically patients follow a similar timeline. Sutures are typically removed between one to two weeks post surgery. After the stitches are removed, you can return to work and can resume very light exercise. We recommend wearing an elastic, stretchy sports bra, or a surgical, compression bra for up to 6 weeks post-surgery. Avoid bras that have an underwire during this time. Swelling should subside between 3-4 weeks, but light swelling may be evident for up to 3-6 months.

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost? Prices starting at $13,000

The cost of a breast revision surgery will vary depending on several factors including the experience and training of your surgeon, the exact techniques and supplies used, as well as charges for anesthesia, and the operating room facility. At VIVIFY, the price starts at $13,000, and we will give you an exact quote during your initial consultation. At VIVIFY, we do not accept insurance, as insurance companies may mandate certain aspects of the surgery that do not align with patient goals. If you’ve considered breast reduction surgery, but feel like you are limited financially, speak to Dr. Buchanan or one of the VIVIFY staff members about financing options. We do our best to work with each patient by offering financing plans to help her achieve her surgical goals.

Finding the Right Plastic Surgeon

When looking for a plastic surgeon, it's important to only consider those who have been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). These surgeons have completed at least 6-8 years of specialized training after finishing medical school to become proficient in both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery.

Will a breast reduction prevent me from breastfeeding?

Breast reduction surgery can potentially affect nipple sensation and function, although many women are still able to produce milk and breastfeed after the procedure. It's worth noting that about 1% to 5% of women who haven't had breast surgery may be unable to breastfeed due to medical reasons, and there's no way to predict whether you'll fall into this category prior to undergoing the surgery.

How much pain will I be in after the surgery?

After undergoing breast reduction surgery, it's typical to experience some mild discomfort and pain, which can be adequately managed with proper pain treatment. Typically, within 3-7 days following the procedure, most patients can discontinue using strong pain medications and switch to an over-the-counter pain reliever like Tylenol.

How do I know what size is right for me?

The most effective method for determining the appropriate breast size for you is to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Your surgeon will consider several factors, such as your body's anatomy, measurements, and desired outcome, to reach a decision. The primary objective is to reduce your breast size so that it better complements your physique. It's important to note that certain insurance policies may mandate a minimum amount of tissue removal, which is another reason we choose not to proceed with surgery under the instruction of the insurance company as we choose to prioritize the patient’s aesthetic goals rather than meet an arbitrary tissue removal requirement.

How long will swelling last?

While the majority of swelling should subside within six weeks following the surgery, it could take between 3-6 months before the final results are fully apparent. To learn more, please get in touch with our office and book a free consultation with Dr. Buchanan.

When can I start working out again?

As previously stated, engaging in vigorous exercise is not recommended for at least two weeks following the surgery to prevent potential complications. After this period, you can resume normal physical activities except for chest-related exercises such as pushing, pulling, and heavy lifting, which should be restricted for six weeks post-surgery. You can gradually reintroduce your regular exercise routine after the six-week mark.

When will my breasts “drop”?

It's common for breasts to settle into their permanent position within three to six months following the surgery.

What bras should I wear after surgery?

Dr. Buchanan recommends patients wear elastic, stretchy bras, or surgical compression bras following the surgery. It's best to avoid bras with underwire or significant padding and structure until six weeks after the surgery. You'll need a bra that provides secure compression and adequate support without excessively constricting or distorting the breasts.

How much time do I need off from work?

The ideal duration for taking time off work following the surgery varies between three to seven days, depending on your unique circumstances and job requirements. If you have any concerns regarding your specific work responsibilities, we recommend discussing them with Dr. Buchanan.
